Friday 20th of August 2004 During the Annual Meeting of Moinitor Action Group on 13 August 2004, the meeting unanimously accepted the following decision: 1. To confirm and dilligently support all the decisions and actions taken by the Executive Committee and the Management Committee of MAG up to now, in connection with the Presidential - and National Assembly’s elections which will take place on the 15th and 16th November 2004, namely: (a) That Mr J W F (Kosie) Pretorius will be nominated as the Presidential candidate for MAG; (b) That Messrs. J W F (Kosie) Pretorius, G W Schaaf, S F Coetzee, J J Viljoen, A W J Pretorius and J H Nieuwoudt will fill the first six places on the party list of MAG for the National Assembly; (c) That, as a result of financial constraints, only one pamphlet, which will also serve as manifesto, will be printed. Its distribution will start as soon as possible; 2. That, with disappointment it was taken note of the fact that the State by way of funding, is this year only contributing about N$ 200 000 to the funds of MAG, in contrast with approximately N$ 1,5 million to the bigger opposition parties and almost N$ 12 million to the governing party itself. 3. That note was taken of the fact that the SADC observer team in connection with the 1999 election in Namibia came to the conclusion that: „Public funding as well as airtime in publicly controlled media was allotted in ratio to the number of Parliamentary seats, giving an overwhelming advantage to the ruling party". 4. That note should be taken of what His Excellency the President, Dr Sam Nujoma said at a later stage on occasion of the official inauguration and hand-over of the SADC Parliamentary Forum Building, namely:"I urge the leaders of the region to take the advice of our election teams very seriously in the interest of advancing a democratic culture in the SADC region. I know for a fact that the interest of our observer delegations is to help build our democratic institutions in order to make them relevant for the peoples in our respective countries." 5. That the meeting agrees with the previous Ombudsman of Namibia, adv. Bience Gawanas, when she asked an audience of UNAM students: „How do you explain the fairness of a race, when you start running and your opponent is one, two metres ahead of you?" 6. That the MAG urgently calls on the voters of Namibia to, in effect, support the wish of His Excellency, the President of Namibia, by strenghthening democracy during the next elections by increasing the support of the opposition and to change the graph below. |
