Saturday 4 September 2004 - Port of Walvis Bay

The Rotary Club of Walvis Bay in conjunction with NAMPORT will be holding the annual Harbour Open Day and Trawler Race in D-Shed at the Port of Walvis Bay on Saturday 4 September 2004 from 10:00 until 16:00. The public of Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Henties Bay are invited to attend. The main objectives of the Harbour Open Day and Trawler Race are to open the Harbour area to the public for the day, to celebrate a fisheries festival and to raise funds for needy and deserving charities in Walvis Bay.

The public is invited to move freely around most of the Harbour and to explore what is only accessible with an entrance permit. The Harbour is a working area and even on the Open Day it is a dangerous area and therefore children, especially, must be under close supervision at all times. During the day it will be possible for the public to acquaint themselves with the workings of a major port and at the same time enjoy the fellowship of the fishing community.

The Trawler Race, staring at 11:00, will take place from the Harbour to Pelican Point and back, ending at about 13:00. There will be a sail past before the race starts so that the public can get a full view of the fishing fleet decked out in their regalia. The trawler completing the race closest to a predetermined handicap time will be the winner. Prize giving, for the winning trawler, the losing trawler and the most "colourful" trawler, will take place after the Trawler Race at about 15:00.

Ongoing events will take place throughout the day in and around D-Shed. These will include go-carts, jumping castles, a kiddy’s train, handcraft stalls, motorcycle and 4x4 drive pasts, music and lots to eat and drink. Easy parking will be available with adequate security.

Please come and enjoy a fun-filled day with the Rotary Club of Walvis Bay and NAMPORT on Saturday 4 September 2004. For further information please do not hesitate to contact the convenor of the Organising Committee, Eugene Loftie-Eaton at 208 2214: work or at 20 3694: home.
