Junior Championships

Two tournaments were held on Friday 17 September and Saturday 18th September 2004.

405 children from 18 primary schools in Namibia took part in the finals of the Standard Bank Namibia Primary School Chess Championships. The event was held at the Eros Primary School in Windhoek on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th September.

The results in the lower primary section were as follows:

Julian Isaak from Emma Hoogenhout Primary School won 1st prize of N$ 300

Jose Kuvioleka from Emma Hoogenhout Primay School won 2nd prize of N$ 200

Luandro Steyn from Suiderhof Primary School won 3rd prize of N$ 100

In the upper primary girl’s section four players shared first place with six out of seven points and each receiving N$ 250 as prize.

They were Ziara Louw from the Emma Hoogenhout Primary School and Tjamrove Rukoro, Ndilimeke Hamutenya and Suoma Nekwaya from the Martti Ahtisaari Primary School.

The winner of the higher primary boy’s section was Mandandi Mukwena from the Emma Hoogenhout Primary School (grade 5) with full points. In 2003 Mandandi then in grade 4 also won the primary division with full points.

Sharing second place with six out of seven points were Manfred Afrikaner trom Nossob Primary, Marais Steyn from Privaatskool Moria, Jason Akwanye and Moses Amunyala from Emma Hoogenhout and Ngakymbiru Katjivena from Martti Ahtisaari Primary School. They each received N$100 as prize.

Thirty chess sets were also distributed as random prizes.

On Saturday 25th September children from the High Schools will battle it out to determine the overall girl champion and boy champion for 2004.

As a further prize the top achievers of the junior division have been invited to take part at this event.
