A Star in Swakopmund - Jenny and her KARAKULIA Sunday 26th of December 2004 Swakopmund star in crafts and business – That is Jenny Carvill from KARAKULIA. PLUS would like to take you on a special tour through the creative workshops where you will enjoy watching the carding, spinning, dyeing and weaving of pure karakul wool into rugs and wall hangings There is an atmosphere of a dedicated team of men and women. Many of the weavers are blessed with a natural artistic flair while others have developed their skill through sheer hard work to produce wonderful pieces of hand-woven art. Jenny is proud of her team and will she will show the visitor or customer the creativity in the workshops, the beautiful colours of the dyed skeins of wool and the finished hand-woven carpets and wall hangings. Karakulia specialize in producing customized carpets and wall hangings, whether it be 8 side or any particular shape, size desired by the customers. Karakulia was established in 1979 from home-craft beginnings with the idea of being creative, giving employment and producing a product that people would hopefully be delighted to purchase. As the demand for the product increased they were able to buy more looms, train and employ more weavers of which some are disabled persons. Today there are 50 members in this closely woven family But KARAKULIA not only continue in training in the craft itself, but also in office and computer work, management skills and design. The housing project which was started is bearing fruit now and 25 members are in the process of becoming home owners KARAKULIA also pursues an adult education programme for its employees and extramural classes are given in English language, in computer and basic life skills to their children KARAKULIA can weave practically every design, whether it is your own, those of well-known artists, ethnic Namibian, modern impressionistic, abstract geometric or scenes from the Namibian landscape, its flora and wildlife, company logos, family crests and children’s artwork Carpets can be dispatched to customers worldwide as per clients’ requests Visitors to Swakopmund this season can never return home without paying a visit to KARAKULIA and become the owner of a treasured karakul carpet or wall hanging |
