The total costs of the redevelopment amount to one hundred and eighty million Namibian Dollars and are a measure to ensure the sustainability of the Wernhil Park Shopping Centre as well as the Central Business District (CBD). Patrick Hashingola, O&L’s Group Public Relations Manager, stated: "Our vision is to enhance social-economic wealth in our country. " Building constructor Murray & Roberts Namibia has been contracted for the 1 st phase redevelopment, which is scheduled to be completed after a period of 5 months. Equating twenty five million Namibian Dollars, this first phase encompasses two major developments:1) Construction of a new parking deck This construction entails the addition of 260 new parking bays. The current open parking site will be closed until construction has been completed. Parking within the parkade next to Wernhil Park will continue to be available. 2) Expansion of Pick ‘n Pay Wernhil The existing Pick ‘n Pay Family Store will be upgraded and expanded with 1500 m². Upon completion it will be the flagship of all Pick ‘n Pay outlets in Namibia, covering a floor space of nearly 6000 m². Over the past 18 months, O&L has invested close to N$ 120 million into the CBD. Most notably are the Standard Bank Centre and Fruit & Veg City. Particulars relating to the construction of another development next to Fruit & Veg City will be communicated to the public following regulatory approval. Trading in the entire Wernhil Park Shopping Centre is set to continue during the redevelopment. Both O&L and Broll Namibia, expressed their regret for any inconvenience that this redevelopment may cause to the public adding that endeavours will be made to keep disruption to customers and tenants minimal. A number of promotional events are lined-up to enhance the shopping convenience for the public during the redevelopment phase. Inaugurated in 1990, the Wernhil Park Shopping Centre is host to a number of retail outlets. The centre was constructed as part of the "Talstrassen project" that commenced in 1988. The project was initiated by the City of Windhoek and aimed to develop and expand the city’s central business district. |
