The South African government will draft new laws according to which property buyers must disclose their race, gender status and nationality to monitor the land reform process in the post-apartheid era.

According to South African news reports, the new plans for the controversial specifications similar to the apartheid era was disclosed by the deeds office. The reason for these new specifications were to monitor the change of ownership from whites to blacks.

The deeds office apparently said it had no information related to race and nationality in its archives and changing the law for that was necessary. The opposition criticised the changes as "racist and retrogressive". The African National Congress which came to power power in 1994, set the target of handing over 30 percent of farm land to black citizens by 2014. Before that, 87% of land was in white ownership opposed to 13% owned by blacks.

Introducuing the new specifications (by law) would assist the deeds office to better monitor the ownership targets, the deeds office was quoted by news reports.
