Saturday 26th of February 2005 Deputy Trade Minister Bernhard Esau launched a guidebook on the new labour law on Wednesday, which was published by the Labour Resource and Research Institute (LaRRI). President Nujoma signed the new Labour Act in December 2004 after five years of discussions but it has not been promulgated yet, due to some discrepancies. LaRRI Director Herbert Jauch said it was decided to publish the guide for employees, trade unions and companies as many people had difficulties understanding various laws. The book includes graphics, pictures and simple language to make the reading easy. Deputy Minister Bernhardt Esau said "LaRRI it was important to simplify the new Labour Act into ordinary language and "worker friendly". In the past, it was discovered that many people were not well informed about the details of the old Act. The new legislation changed from resolving disputes in labour courts towards mediation and arbitration. The law is to come into force in different phases until fully implemented by August. Copies of the guide are on sale for N$ 60 at the LaRRI offices in Katutura. Meanwhile, the Namibia Institute for Democracy (NID) published the second part of its Labour Lexicon in Windhoek on Friday. |
