Petrol Price Risimg in South Africa

Friday 1st of April 2005

The price of petrol in South Africa will rise by 38 cents next week, jumping over the N$/R 5 mark in Gauteng a litre. This follows another steep increase earlier this month, in which petrol went up 42 cents a litre, and diesel between 33 and 35 cents.

The South African ministry of minerals and energy said that the price of all categories of fuel would rise in response to higher global oil prices and fuel tax hikes which were announced in February, according to South African news reports.

The wholesale price of diesel will increase by 55 cents and 65 cents per litre, depending on the sulphur content. The retail price of paraffin will increase by 65 cents. The increase will take effect next Wednesday on 6 April. In Namibia, the government reviews fuel prices every month and the next review will be in mid April. The increase of South African fuel prices is said to have an impact in Namibia as prices for goods transported to Namibia might be increased as a result.
