The recent destruction of pristine desert area and breeding grounds, plants, snakes and chameleons by 800 South African bikers over Easter has brought a reaction from the ministry of environment and tourism (MET). "The MET strongly condemns and regrets the detrimental effects caused by this rally on the Namib dune belt and environment", said Minister Willem Konjore. The MET would now liase with the Walvis Bay municipality to address the usage of this area, initiate a land use plan and give some areas protective status and commission an environmental assessment, according to Konjore. In his statement, he called on all visitors to Namibia to cooperate to protect the country’s environment and the sustainable use of its resources.
