Name for Katutura Stadium

The Windhoek City Council on Wednesday approved a compromise in the wrangle to find a proper name for the new N$ 64 million soccer stadium. A proposal was made for "Katutura Soccer Stadium" and a proposal by nobody else but the SWAPO Youth League under radical Paulus Kapia (now a deputy minister) to name it after Mr Sam Nujoma, thus being purely and wholly a politically motivated proposal, another indication that not even sport can be kept out of politics in this country. The name will now be "Sam Nujoma Soccer Stadium". Nujoma never bothered about soccer in the past 15 years and even before that, neither did Kapia ever show any liking for this sport. With this decision, the SWAPO-dominated Windhoek city council once again proved that it is a servant of the ruling party, despite the fact that the N$ 64 million comes from all ratepayers in this city and many of them are definitely not SWAPO members.

In a similar vein, the erf worth N$ 27 million taken by the government to build a new state house has still not been paid. Ministries and other government institutions owe about N$ 200 million debt to the municipality, but nothing is undertaken by the City to get the debts paid.

Ironically, the City wants to get stricter on illegal use of municipal land. A draft plan will be submitted to the line ministry for approval.
