Thursday 3rd of April 2003 The chief executive officer of the Windhoek municipality reacted furiously to allegations by opposition parties and environmental organisations with regard to seeping toxins from the fabric dye division into Windhoek’s ground water resources. Mr Martin Shipanga, who earns an income of 1,2 million N$ per year with all string benefits included, accused rich people "living in Klein Windhoek who drive five cars" of being against foreign direct investments like the Ramatex textile plant, which is "creating 16 000 jobs". Briefing media on latest developments on Wednesday, Mr Shipanga noted Ramatex at last submitted an environmental assessment report to the municipality, which was currently being studied by experts, as well as the ministry of environment and tourism. On the question of the illegal housing erected by Ramatex exclusively for its Chinese workforce on the factory premises, Shipanga said, the City would deal with it. He stressed that no hazardous wastes of Ramatex were reaching Windhoek’s ground water reserves, calling the allegations "a dream in the wilderness." He did not say if the environmental report would be made public. |
