Cleaning up Omaruru

Ernst Naomab, member of the Executive Committee of the NCCI branch in Omaruru, learned that the Municipality is planning a Clean Up Omaruru campaign in the near future. He spoke to some of his neighbours and three of them, Abel Gurirab, Raymond Nowaseb and Mr Naomab went to the Municipality to get permission to help. They were granted permission to "adopt" three street intersections which they want to beautify. the Municipality agreed to provide clay dirt and some other support for a start.

The group chose one of the street intersections and chose a „Heart" as the theme of their park in the middle of the triangle where !Narratab !Nuwuseb Street and Richardt //Garoeb Street come together in Ozondje. Mr Naomab, who is the spokesperson of the group of organizers said: „We chose this place to start our project because it is within fifty meters of the place where King Manasse Tjiseseta had built his house over a hundred years ago. There is only a single Shepherd‘s tree standing today from that period, and we felt we should honour the history of this place. We are thinking about proposing to the Municipality that they call this place ‚Manasse Park‘ to commemorate this fact."

Mr Naomab continued: „We cleaned up the trash and garbage in the middle of the street and the Municipality carried it off. They then brought the dirt and the stones which we used to finish this heart."

Mr Naomab pointed out two to three other locations which the group has adopted and which they wish also to beautify. „We plan to tackle one this coming weekend (previous, Ed.) and the last on the following weekend."

Over the past two to three months the Municipality has tarred several of the sand roads in Ozondje and has begun to add new traffic signs. It has been rumoured that the Municipality plans to put in new street signs, naming the streets in Ozondje. The attitude of the residents is strongly in support of the efforts being made to beautify their part of town.
