Saturday 2nd of July 2005 Looking back on a very successful year, the President of the Cancer Association of Namibia, Dr Basie Steyn first mentioned the financial situation of CAN: "Taking all into account , the financial situation in Namibia etc. we must be thankful for what we have achieved, and at this point I would like to express my personal thanks and appreciation to all who in the past year again have assisted the Association in whatever way they can; without your contribution we would not be able to achieve our common goal: TO FIGHT AND BEAT CANCER!" The Association needs some 1 mio. N$ to exist, managing the whole of Namibia with only 8 paid staff members and 28 Sub Committees (all volunteers), Dr Steyn mentioned in particular the following projects: Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project: 63% increase First National Bank Carnation Project 26% increase MTC Cup for Cancer Project 10 % increase Sanlam Cancer Golf Challenge 83% increase Collection tins 50% increase Street collections 24 % increase For many years now CCC has been transporting all apples and carnations throughout Namibia „free of charge", while HH was transporting all apples in Windhoek „free of charge"and DHL has been sponsoring all freight costs for carnations from Johannesburg to Windhoek (some 60 000 to 70 000 N$). Over the years, Bank Windhoek, First National Bank, Standard Bank, MTC, Sanlam, Old Mutual have been generous, contributing to the fight against Cancer, not forgetting other companies, firms who over years have become loyal friends. But then „we never forget the hundreds and thousands of helping hands, who help us make things happen". The appointment of an assistant to the Director who could possibly take over on his retirement next year, led to an increase of expenses by 16%. But the main functions are conducted in a very commendable way: Information, Welfare and Research. The flag ship is „House Acacia", an interim home, where Cancer patients from throughout Namibia stay free of charge while receiving treatment; „not even in RSA this is possible". This is made possible through loyal friends such as Namsov Community Trust‘s yearly contribution and friends along the way who never come empty-handed when visiting somebody at Acacia. During the previous year, CAN assisted Cancer sufferers with additional funding to the amount of N$ 164 853. The Sanlam Papsmeer and Breast examination clinics in Windhoek and throughout Namibia have increased to 4700, costing the Association some N$ 75 647. For these clinics CAN receives a yearly sponsorship of N$ 30 000 from Sanlam Namibia. Dr Steyn thanked everybody involved, congratulated Minister Richard Kamwe on his appointment and expressed his gratitude to all Doctors and Staff. And he thanked the Patron, Mrs Hildegard List, „who with 85 years is still on the go, wants to be involved and with never ending enthusiasm sets a fine example". |
