The Role Model: We're not a Team, we are a Club Saturday 30th of July 2005 Since 2002 the Ramblers Club has ended three times in 4th place and now they were third in the Premier League. Add to this three bronze medals in Cup competitions and the NFA-Cup of this season - and you start wondering: What makes this club tick? Why are they successful? During the awards ceremony, Manuel Coelho said: "Where are the Clubs? We have teams in Namibia". This sums it up in a very good way and it is easy for 15 guys to get together and play Football, but onlyRamblers seems to privileged to have a well-established Club with a playing field (preparing a second pitch). And the necessary infrastructure to be declared professional. The new Technical Director of the NFA, Setn Boois, aptly commented: „Ramblers do not need to turn professional; they must just be declared professional". Because Ramblers are leaders in many ways. Considering that African Stars in 1979 was professional on the field - but then did not move forward (like for example Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa) - , one may ask: What will happen to Namibian Football, if Ramblers starts hesitating now... They have great players and good coaches. But this can be said of the NFA as well. And still, there is a lot missing in our Football. Not so at Ramblers! The „Tünschel-Street-Boys" in blue-and-white are not just another team, but they are paving the way to professionalism.Windhoek Optics was the first private company to invest in Football - and already the Windhoek Optics sponsorship has made a difference. One has to „salute Mr Mehl for his vision; he has made history" (like Chairperson Harald Hecht stressed). In 2002 an incentive of N$ 25 per point was put up; one year later fixed salaries, which amounted to some N$ 20 000 this year) were payed - „even when players were injured". Ramblers players receive a payment based on merit and Hecht said: „We will not stop this objective". Two years ago a bus was bought. The Colts, the Veterans and even the Women are all doing well. So, the infrastructure does not stop at Premier League level. Lorenz von Somnitz put up a very attractive website, on which Mark Kutzner will display the contract for players/ employees. The same commitment and seriousness can not be found at NFA-level! Ramblers had to wait for 10 days before receiving their prize money - and the Premier League was completed 53 days ago, but still the third team on the log has not received their prize money. At the same time, the Club had to pay in excess of N$ 1.1 million to keep the show running. In future, Ramblers may link up in a way to Benfica Lisbon and Marokko Swallows. The question could be asked: What would the NFA be without Clubs like Ramblers (and SKW, who can at least play on an own field)? Shouldn‘t we rather accept professionalism (in every sense and consequence of that topic!) and strive to have the stractures in order - up to the highest levels??? It does really not help to have lots of players, even teams, but no functioning Clubs! So, Ramblers could be said to be THE Role Model in Namibian Football. |
