Friday 23rd of September 2005 Former president Sam Nujoma has either a very clever tactic up his sleeve for trying to remain in the news these days or his is confused about his status as retired head of state. He visited the Omaheke region as president of the SWAPO party, held political party rallies and at the same time – with a scarf in SWAPO colours round his neck – dished out food rations to members of the San community in the name of the Sam Nujoma Foundation. This foundation should be neutral and without any party affiliation. Mr Nujoma addressed issues like local and regional authorities and Vision 2030, a government programme. Such topics should rather be left to the active and serving government authorities. It appears as if Namibia will have to get used to the fact that two presidents in tandem de facto rule the country. Political rumours have it that Mr Nujoma is already gearing himself for the SWAPO congress in 2007. It is said that he would like to remain "in power" – not only as party president. |
