Cooperation in Agricultural Sector Sunday 2nd of October 2005 The South African minister for agriculture and land said cooperation in the agrarian sector with Namibia would enhance the performance of both countries in this sector. "We also discussed land reform and we can learn form each other in this sector", Minister Didiza said. South Africa is yet to start introducing a land tax, while it is already in place in Namibia. Didiza also visited a resettlement farm near Gobabis on Wednesday afternoon. On the question why the Pretoria government was mulling to away with the willing buyer, willing seller concept, Didiza would not elaborate, it said that it was not fast enough achieve a 30 percent change on land ownership to black citizens in the next few years. South Africa last week announced its first farm expropriation. Namibia’s agricultural minister Dr Nickey Iyambo told reporter at the joint press conference in Windhoek on Thursday that despite a levy on the export of live cattle, goats and sheep to South Africa, to possibly exempt goats. "We discovered that KwaZulu-Natal is a very good market for our live goats, due to cultural practices there". Mostly women from poor households were breeding goats in Namibia on communal land, Iyambo explained. "They should get a chance of benefiting from the exports of goats on hoof", he said. The tricky issue of finding the border either in the middle of the Orange River or the south bank was not discussed, according to Iyambo. "That topic rests with our foreign ministries", he added. Namibia can extract 50 million cubic metres of water per annum from the Orange River, but so far uses 48 million. |
