Kapia remains a problem for SWAPO Saturday 15th of October 2005 Although Paulus Kapia, former deputy transport minister, who was involved in the AVID loan scandal, was asked by SWAPO to resign from Parliament, he still arrives every day at the National Assembly. A monthly magazine has published this letter I its latest edition, written by SWAPO secretary general, Dr Ngarikutuke Tjiriange on 8 September. "Dear Comrade", the letter said, "I wish to inform you that in view of new developments, I would like to earnestly ask you to resign your seat in the National Assembly by a letter under your signature addressed to the Speaker of the national Assembly to that effect, so that we can avoid any complications that might afversely affect the SWAPO Party and yourself as an individual", the letter said. On Tuesday Dr Tjiriange told PLUS, the letter was an instruction from the party’s 21-member polit buro, but he would not comment on the apparent refusal of Kapia to give up his seat. "The polit buro has not met again after I sent the letter to Mr Kapia", was all Tjiriange would tell PLUS. According to well-placed sources within SWAPO, Kapia seems to enjoy backing from some prominent politicians, who allegedly encourage him to stay on as MP. "But it is an embarrassment", a member told PLUS, "we wonder why Nujoma does not act, he is party president". |
