Iceland: Developing Namibia’s Chess Sunday 23rd of October 2005 At the beginning of this week, Chess Grandmaster Hendrik Danielsen from Iceland landed in Windhoek. His mission is part of the development programme, which Iceland earlier this year promised to the Namibia Chess Federation. Already, Otto Nakapunda had a one-month stint in Iceland to study chess. This Friday, a contract will be signed with the NCF. Speculation has it that somehow a first African Grandmaster will be promoted through this contract. At the moment, the continent has no GM in chess. One source even spoke of "maybe 1 Million US-Dollar as a carrot for any Namibian who achieves this feat within 5 years". Let’s wait and see what comes from the contract on Friday. |
