Friday 4th of November 2005 Your article in last week’s PLUS refers. The very same swindle is blatantly going on in Namibia as well ! Actually worse, as freelance tourguides in Namibia are paid a great deal more than in South Africa. Apparently one can hardly find a "beginner" to work for under 500.00 per day (experienced hands up to 900.00/day), all expenses paid, sometimes including drinks. This excludes tips, sometimes generous, which are obviously "tax free". A tourguide once asked me where he could find a certain article, and when I told him where he could get it, he asked whether he would get discount. When I asked him on what grounds he should get discount, he boldly stated "I am a tourguide, I don’t buy anywhere I don’t get a good discount and don’t take my clients anywhere I don’t get commission !" The Tourist Board (or whoever tourgides have to register with) should enforce laws against these practices!!! Disgusted, Swakopmund |
