Saturday 12th of November 2005 The Namibia Institute for Democracy (NID) invites to the Public Lecture "From Apartheid to Democracy - Namibia and South Africa compared" by Christopher Saunders of the University of Cape Town, South Africa on Tuesday, 15 November at 18h00 at the Namibia Hotel & Tourism School (Polytechnic of Namibia) at the corner of Beethoven & Brahms Streets, Windhoek West. This lecture will consider aspects of the transitions from apartheid to democracy in Namibia and South Africa and try to compare the historical experiences of the two countries. These transitions are not only important historically; how democracy has evolved in Namibia after 1990 and in South Africa after 1994 has been shaped in part by how democratic systems in the two countries came into being. There are many different ways of understanding the processes involved, and the reasons for them, and this paper will advance a set of propositions that members of the audience will be able to challenge if they wish to do so. |
