A strong delegation from Namibia will travel to Hong Kong next week for the next round of trade talks of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The most important topic will be the demand by developing countries on Europe and the US to stop subsidising their farmers to allow fair trade for agricultural products from Africa, South America, and Asia. Trade minister Immanuel Ngatjizeko, agriculture minister Dr Nickey Iyambo and technical staff from these 2 ministries as well as the finance ministry will accompany them. In Hong Kong Namibia will sign a trade agreement with those European countries that are not members of the EU. Namibia will sign as a member of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). The European countries are Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Liechtenstein; they are grouped under the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). This association has offered duty free entry for all SACU industrial products.
