Saturday 10th of December 2005 The polit buro of SWAPO under its president Sam Nujoma has expelled former mines and energy minister Jesaya Nyamu from the party with immediate effect, the party announced on Thursday. Nyamu had written private notes by hand on SWAPO issues a year ago, which were stolen from his ministerial office drawer. These notes seem to have brought his downfall. Instead of calling for a press conference, the party president Sam Nujoma opted to have the announcement faxed to all media institutions. To add insult to injury, the SWAPO office faxed 5 pages of Nyamu’s notes to the media as well on Thursday. In one of the notes, he allegedly had written that an option for ministers was to "quit government one by one" and make public announcements why. This would "weaken even more the new government of President Pohamba", a page of the notes reads. People who wanted changes in Swapo had to "prepare for a long political struggle", another note in the same handwriting says. The one-page press release of SWAPO, signed by Nujoma said Nyamu "carried himself in a manner contrary to SWAPO ideals". He allegedly incited "division, violence and factionalism" and was "not worth" the SWAPO membership. "Therefore, he was excommunicated form the party", the press release said. |
