The container carrier Umfolozi collided within port limits on Friday, 16 September 2005 with the dredger Ingwenya, which was on its way into the Walvis Bay harbour. About 100 tonnes of heavy fuel and diesel spilled into the sea. The Umfolozi was carrying some 335 tonnes of fuel oil when she was struck on her starboard side. A large hole was ripped into the wing fuel tanks. Pictured is the Umfolozi at the beginneng of this year, after welding work has been done. The ship is nearly "refurbished". |
