Tuesday 24th of January 2006 The Namibian Ports Authority will receive a very special consignment on Thursday next week, when a floating dock will arrive from Malta. It is a ship repair dock and can take ships up to the size of 8,500 tonnes. A floating dock can be lowered into the ocean at the port and a ship in need of repair is pulled in. The dock then gets lifted again and with it the vessel, which can be repaired. The floating dock is a first for Namibia and a multi-million dollar investment. NamPort officials remained tight-lipped about the exact costs. The port authority has a partner, Elgin, Brown Hammer, incorporating Wesco Salvage, which owns 47,5% of the floating dock, with NamPort holding 52,5%. The dock started its journey past the African west coast just before Christmas and is expected to enter Walvis Bay at 8h00 on 26 January. |
