No more Reconciliation Committee for Hereros

The idea to establish a national reconciliation committee for Herero-, Nama- and Damara-speaking citizens to discuss ways how to spend the promised 20 million euros form the German government on reconciliatory projects was dropped, a German state minister said. In a letter to a German NGO, Deutschland Postkolonial (DEPO) written last month, development cooperation minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul wrote that only local committees at individual towns and villages were now envisaged. In the letter, which is in possession of PLUS, the German minister wrote that this decision was taken "jointly with the Namibian government".

However, the Namibian public is unaware of it. After Germany’s apology in August 2004 for past atrocities committed against Hereros, Namas and Damaras, a dialogue committee was to be set up to negotiate reconciliation efforts. The Herero-people urged for speedy implementation in October 2004, but the Namibian government said, it would take the initiative. However, nothing happened since then.
