Windhoek invited to Berlin Football Tournament Friday 10th of February 2006 ![]() The City of Berlin extended an invitation to its partner city of Windhoek, Beijing , Buenos Aires, London, Moscow, Paris and Tokio to take part in a football tournament along with a tream from Berlin, organised in conjunction with the Berlin Football Association, which will take place in Berlin from 30 April to 6 May 2006.
The purpose of this tournament is based on the recognition that sports is often an excellent framework for encounters between young people. As such the requirement for the composition of teams from the above partner cities representing our continents is to send boys born after 1992, which means Under-15s. Regarding the arrangements, Berlin will take care of all the costs for rooms, transport and a total of up to 22 people is expected to accompany a team. The City of Windhoek has warmly accepted the invitation and confirmed its participation in the tournament. According to the Mayor of the City of Windhoek, Matthew Shikongo, this tournament is a golden opportunity to have our youngsters taking part in such a historic adventure just before the World Cup Tournament in Germany. The City of Windhoek invited the Namibian Football Association as the umbrella body for the soccer fraternity to take part in the organisation of the venture, taking into account its expertise and know-how in this field. On the other hand, the NFA welcomed the opportunity and agreed to work together with the City to organise this event which can boost the City of Windhoek‘s image in particular by taking part in the mini-soccer-tournament as a prelude to the much acclaimed World Cup Tournament. In organising this event, a joint steering committee was established and tasked to plan and prepare this mini soccer tournament, look at issues like composition and selection of team, financial and logistical aspects of the trip. In order to make this event a success, the City of Windhoek is appealing to the corporate world for a sponsorship to support the Windhoek team and associate themselves with this significant and historic international Berlin-Sister Cities mini tournament. On the occasion the NFA President Petrus Damaseb thanked the City of Windhoek for the commitment and the couraged showed by the City „towards the development of Football, the most popular sport in our country". He lauded the building of a soccer field last year as part of the commitment of the City of Windhoek in line with the development of Sports. The majority of people in this country have a keen interest in football. Therefore „we accepted with great enthusiasm the invitation" to Berlin.
