Several companies and organizations made donations in cash and kind for victims of the Mariental flood this week. Agra donated one tonne of maize meal, Pupkewitz Holdings donated N$10,000 and First National Bank also donated cash. Cellular operator MTC donated N$250,000 on Wednesday. This is the turnover made last Friday alone from mobile phone calls and SMS messages.

Namibia Breweries donated to the Mariental communities last week. NBL responded by donating soft drinks to the value of about N$10,000 to the Mariental community. A donation was also made to Ohlthaver & List colleagues at its Pardah Farm at Mariental who were also affected by the floods. Staff at the brewery is busy collecting basic necessities such as non-perishable food, clothing and cash among colleagues to donate to the people in Mariental.

Meanwhile a team of experts from the government under Piet Heyns is assessing the damage caused by the floods. It will investigate if the town should be relocated and if a wall should be built along the western outskirts to prevent future floods. The MP of Monitor Action Group, Jurie Viljoen caused a stir in the National Assembly this week, when he claimed that the government was slow in its help to Mariental victims, because mainly white residents were affected.
