Between November 28 and 2 December 2005 His Worship the Mayor of the City of Windhoek, Councillor Matheus Shikongo and Dr Bjorn Von Finckenstein Chairman of the Management Committee accom-panied the President of the Republic of Namibia, HE Hifikepunye Pohamba on a state visit to the Federal Republic of Germany. The Namibian delegation was made up of representatives from Government agencies, local authorities and corporate Namibia, who engaged their counter parts on issues of common interests.

During the Presidential visit to Berlin, the City’s delegation had a chance to meet the Mayor of Berlin, His Worship, Cllr Klaus Wowereit, where the issue regarding assistance to Windhoek City Police was discussed. During the same discussion the Mayor of Berlin pledged to invite Windhoek to send a team of young boys under 15 years of age to partake in a youth football tournament in Berlin between April 30 and 6 May 2006. Windhoek will participate in the youth tournament with other partner Cities of Berlin such as Paris, Tokyo, Beunos Aires, Beijing, Moscow and London.

Germany being the host of the much acclaimed Football World Cup tournament wants to host the youth tournament as a prelude to the world cup being staged there. The pledge from Berlin was actualised in a letter forwarded to the Mayor’s office. The City of Berlin will accord hospitality to the participating teams in the form of accommodation, meals and transport while in Germany. In this regard, the City has approach NFA to constitute this team and to work together with the City in looking at the selection, the logistical and technical aspects as part of the preparation of the City to partake in this Youth Tournament.
