The defence minister requested N$54,3 million for the approximately 900 soldiers of the 21st Guard Regiment, which so far looked after the safety of the head of state and is responsible for ceremonial duties at national occasions.

However, members of the NDF have been visibly removed from the State House area in the past month and only police officers are now in charge. Peter Tsheehama-Tshirumbu, the minister of safety and security, confirmed this. "The police force has also assumed additional responsibility of providing close protection services to the head of state (Pres. Pohamba), the State House and the presidential guest house", the safety and security minister told the National Assembly last week. For the protection and security for all national leaders, including President Pohamba and visiting VIP’s, the police received N$107,8 million. This is very little compared to the N$ 54,3 million the defence ministry received for only one regiment and this regiment not looking after the security of President Pohamba anymore.

No reasons were given for the quiet change last month from the NDF to the police, which now guard the life of President Pohamba.
