Complete re-armament for Defence Force Friday 28th of April 2006 Defence minister wants to fit out the entire defence force with new equipment and "modern weapons" and that goes for all its divisions: army, air force and the navy. He claimed that the military equipment, a "donation" from the military wing of SWAPO at independence had become outdated and spare parts "no longer under production". Minister Charles Namoloh announced that the defence ministry together with the University of Namibia was busy developing a master’s degree in security and strategic studies. A military academy would soon be established at Okahandja. Some 9 farms covering 56,000 hectares were purchased by the ministry of defence since 2001, Namoloh told the National Assembly, when the defence budget was discussed. The farms were bought form the defunct National Development Corporation (NDC). Some 1,600 cattle, 600 goats, and 200 sheep are on hose farms. Minister Namoloh revealed that the company Satellite Communications (Satcom) also belonged to the ministry. The other 2 companies are Windhoeker Maschinenfabrik (WMF) and August 26 Holding. No annual reports of these 3 state-owned companies were ever submitted to the National Assembly although by law each state-owned agency and enterprise must publish an annual report to be tabled in the National Assembly. The defence force will soon manufacture its own boots and uniforms by opening its own shoe and garment factories with a foreign investor. The total budgetary allocation for defence is N$1,33 billion. The budget debate ends this Friday and the National Assembly will be in recess until mid-June. |
