Friday 28th of April 2006 The leading umbrella body of the labour movement, the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) is holding its fourth congress since independence this weekend. About 1,000 delegates are expected according to acting Secretary general Evirastus Kaaronda. The NUNW congress only takes place every 4 years. Black empowerment and failed foreign investment like the Ramatex garment factory will feature prominently on the agenda as well as minimum wages. On Friday night, a grand dinner will be held for all 1,000 delegates at a Windhoek hotel. Early on Saturday morning all delegates will march from the NUNW head office in Katutura to the congress venue at the Windhoek College for Education, where the official opening starts at 9h00. President Pohamba will open the congress. Candidates for seven top leadership positions must be elected, including the president, the 2 vice presidents, the secretary general, and his deputy. The former acting secretary general, Peter Naholo was fired, reinstated and suspended recently. His case is expected to feature prominently during the deliberations. The congress ends on Sunday afternoon. |
