The Namibian government will soon start to implement minimum wages in certain economic sectors, Cabinet decided at its last meeting. Based on a wages survey conducted in 2005, and not yet published, the government has decided to let the ministry of labour and social welfare to draft a "comprehensive wage policy" that will introduce minimum wages to "the worst sectors of the economy" to help eradicate poverty. The report on the wages survey will be tabled in Parliament next month and will thus become a public document. So far, the agricultural sector has voluntarily implemented minimum wages and was the first, followed by security guards.

The report of the 2004 Labour Survey will also be tabled in Parliament soon.
