Second cell phone licence granted Friday 26th of May 2006 After 10 years of monopoly of MTC, The Namibian government has granted another company a cell phone licence, not to an established international company, but to a dormant Namibian company, PowerCom, a subsidiary of NamPower. In the latest government bulletin on Cabinet decisions released this week, this was confirmed. Cabinet endorsed the recommendation of the Namibia Communications Commission. NamPower has established PowerCom Pty Ltd in 2004. Its consortium membership consists of a 51 % Namibian ownership and 49 % Norwegian ownership. The local partners are the Namibia Mineworkers’ Investment Holding Company (NAMIC) Pty Ltd. - through Zeven Investments, and Old Mutual Namibia. Telecom Management Partner (TMP) of Norway is the foreign shareholder in PowerCom. TMP is a fully owned subsidiary of Telenor, a company listed at the Oslo stock exchange. The Norwegian state holds 63 % of the TMP shares. Namibia’s only cellphone company MTC was established in 1995 as a joint venture between Namibia Post and Telecommunications Holdings (NPTH) and 2 Swedish enterprises, Telia Overseas AB and Swedfund International AB. In May 2004, NPTH acquired the 49 % of the 2 Swedish partners. In March this year, NPTH sold 34% shares to Portugal Telecom. |
