Friday 26th of May 2006 German experts of the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) have found underground water in eastern Namibia near the Eiseb River north of Epukiro. The Eiseb Graben has allegedly water in 150 m depth. Another water source was found in the Eastern tip of the Caprivi Region, probably water of the Quando River trickling underground on its way to the Linyanti River. The BGR presented the results to agriculture minister Dr Nickey Iyambo on Monday. The BGR has been active in Namibia since 16 years doing airborne research for mineral resources and water, all financed by the German government. A new project starting later this year will investigate the Cuvelai system in north-central Namibia. BGR researcher Rainer Haut on Monday warned that the newly discovered underground water should not lead to stocking large amounts of livestock in the areas as the vegetation would not be able to be maintained and overgrazing might set in. |
