SADC ministers meet on DRC

A meeting of the Inter-State Politics and Diplomacy Committee (ISPDC) of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) took place in Windhoek between 13 and 15 June. SADC ministers responsible for foreign affairs and for defence attended the Meeting. Amongst other things, the ministers discuss the review the political situation in the SADC Region; consolidation of democracy in the region, staffing at the SADC Secretariat, and SADC contribution to peace support operations with a special focus on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where elections will be held next month. Riots broke out in Kinshasa on Tuesday when opposition parties demanded to have more say in the organisation of the elections, the first elections since 1960.
