Telecom Namibia announced the merging of charging distant calls for national fixed to fixed lines with from 1 July 2006. Currently domestic fixed to fixed calls are charged according to 3 different areas, local, 100 km and above 100 km. The 3 charging zones will now be reduced to local and national only.
The introduction of the new domestic tariff structure will benefit telephone users as long distance calls become cheaper. Short distance call charges will increase towards cost levels of delivering the calls. Local call charges will be kept unchanged with the new domestic charging structure. This will be good news to customers as the majority of callers mostly make long distance and local calls.
Distant calls cost N$0.85 per minute plus VAT from 1 July 2006 and off peak to N$0.60 per minute plus VAT. Local calls will now cost 38c during peak time and 19c off peak plus VAT.
