NamPower plans an open-cycle gas-turbine plant (OCGT) in its existing Paratus power station, near Walvis Bay, according to the weekly Engineering news.
recent power interruptions in the Cape also affected Namibia, which imports about half of its power supply from the Koeberg nuclear power plant north of Cape Town. In a tender document, NamPower says that it aims to have the new unit operational by the beginning of next year’s winter to increase its generation capacity of 384 MW.

NamPower issued a tender inviting suppliers to submit proposals for the supply, delivery, instal-lation and commissioning of the OCGT plant, which will operate on week days only with six full-load operating hours a day to deliver 22 to 27 mega watt MW. Most of the power generated will be supplied to Walvis Bay, but two of the 66-kV lines will transport power into the Namibian grid. - After 2010, Namibia will have additio-nal new capacity through transmission interconnector lines from Zambia and Zimbabwe, and the 800-MW Kudu gas-to-power project.
