The Basic Income Grant Coalition held a leadership workshop titled "Church and Society - A Basic Income Grant for Namibia". The workshop was hosted in the Windhoek Inner-City Lutheran Church. The Basic Income Grant (BIG) Coalition consists of the Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN), the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW), the Namibian NGO Forum (NANGOF), and the Namibian Network of AIDS Service Organisations (NANASO). This broad-based coalition advocates the introduction of a Basic Income Grant in Namibia of N$100 per month for citizens from birth until they reach the age of 60. Then they will receive the state pension. The workshop held in-depth discussions about this policy proposal from an economic, legal as well as theological perspective. The focus was on the Basic Income Grant’s role in not only reducing poverty and creating economic security but in its role in promoting economic empowerment and enabling people to meaningful partake in the Namibian economy and society at large. The BIG Coalition solicited inputs from local and international economic, legal and theological experts to engage with the workshop participants on these important questions. The workshop ends today, Friday.
