What does the future hold for Kolmanskop? Friday 25th of August 2006 A successfull salvage of the Novanam Fishing Company’s fishing vessel that stranded on Wednesday 16. August 2006, becomes more and more improbable with each day passing by. Until now, only little progress has been made in salvaging the Kolmanskop, which was unsnapped by strong south-west winds from its landing stage in Walvis Bay and drifted 40 kilometers northwards where it ran aground only 50 meters away from land. Caused by a strong east wind this week, which aggravated the work on the fishing vessel, the ship probably got stuck harder on the rocky cliffs between Vierkantklip and Swakopmund. At the moment, the removal of pollutants and especially oil from the fishing vessel is in progress. In case of the Kolmanskop not being salvaged, economic effects on the plants and animals of the sea region are hardly conceivable. Photo: ak |
