Star train on the march forward
ak. Since August, the Omugulugwombashe Star train has transported about 861 passengers on the incomplete Tsumeb-Oshikango line. 
At the end of school vacations the train was fully booked. But also during other times bookings of 50 to 70 percent are made. Even though the journey is longer than per road, the train has obviously become very popular.  The journey from Windhoek to Ondangwa can accommodate 128 passengers. 
The train leaves Windhoek on Fridays at 17h30 and arrives at Ondangwa on Saturdays 10h00, the return trip lasts from 13h00 Sundays at Ondangwa to 05h20 Mondays in Windhoek.

Vaccination campaign completed
ak. The mass polio vaccination campaign, initiated by the Government after the polio epidemic in May, was completed on Tuesday 12 September 2006. At the last of the three immunisation campaigns, 301805 children under the age of five were vaccinated. Thus 90 percent aimed coverage could not be reached in all regions. The government appealed to people to remain alert and concentrate on general hygiene, e.g. washing hands before meals and after using the toilet. 

Power Cut in Bethanien
ak. Due to outstanding accounts NamPower discontinued the power supply to Bethanien. Bethanien owes NamPower roughly N$294 000 and tried to avoid a complete power cut, by paying N$80 000 on Friday, but this was not accepted by NamPower. NamPower requested the village council to settle the debts in full. 

Body of German National found
ak. The body of a man was found in the harbour basin at Lüderitz last Sunday. According to the police report, the dead person was identified as Rudolf Huber, a German National who was living in the harbour on his yacht. Rudolf Huber, who has sailed around the world for a couple of years had probably fallen from his boat and drowned, the police presumed.

Keep off the ship
ak. The owner of the Kolmanskop trawler, Novaship Namibia, has placed a notice board on the beach near the stranded vessel, stating that because of the stranded vessels unsafe condition trespassing on the deck or illegally entering the ship is strictly forbidden. Retrieving the vessel, which stranded on 16 August was not possible until today according to the owner, because the vessel was stuck on the rocks.

 

South African tourists died in car-crash
ak. Two South African tourists died in a car crash 84 kilometres east of Walvis Bay on the Khomas-Hochland road last Thursday. Because the car overturned, two other passengers were seriously injured. Iris Frank-Schulz had more luck last Friday as she lost control over her car, which also overturned near Arandis. In this case all passengers were only slightly injured.
