Ex-Combatants: Some Options not yet exhausted

On 9 September, Bishop Dr Z. Kameeta issued the following Statement in Windhoek:

The founding President His Excellency Dr. S. Nujoma and the former PLAN Combatants undivided, are proud symbols of our liberation struggle. They are also an invaluable historic heritage for our children and the coming generations. The history of Namibia will not be complete if it is told without mentioning them. Therefore it is imperative on all of us to protect their dignity.

The war of words which has been going on through the media for several weeks is very much unfortunate.

Condemnations and demonstrations will not solve anything but will only widen the gap and create more hostility and division. This will threaten the peace, tranquillity and development which we are experiencing and praying for in Namibia. It is again therefore a must for each and everyone of us as citizens of this beautiful country to tirelessly work and put together all efforts for justice, unity and peace in Namibia. We must learn to listen to one another and tolerate each other’s views. If we are not prepared to do this, we can altogether forget about vision 2030, but settle for unrest, destruction and poverty.

I firmly believe that all options for an amicable solutions has not been exhausted. This problem is not bigger than the liberation of Namibia which we achieved! In view of all this I call on our government and the former Plan Combatants to come together and for once and for all to find a lasting solution to this problem in the spirit of mutual respect and understanding.

I express my sincere gratitude to the former fighters for accepting my request to cancel the demonstration which was planned for Monday the 4th of September 2006 to make room for constructive negotiations.

May God guide all of us as we are searching for a just, peaceful and lasting solution.
