Herero Paramount Chief Kuiama Riruako made history on Tuesday when he delivered his motivational speech in Parliament, the old German colonial building, for his motion that Members of Parliament should debate on the reparation demands of the Ovaherero people, against whom German colonial rule committed atrocities between 1904 to 1908. The gallery reserved for visitors was packed to capacity with his supporters as the 71-ear old chief called for a dialogue conference between his people, the German and Namibian government to "solve this matter once and for all". Riruako gave a short overview of the 1904 Herero uprising and the sufferings his people endured in what he called Africa’s first genocide. The demand for reparations was justified, Riruako stated. The debate will start next Thursday. Meanwhile the Ovaherero/Ovamban-deru Genocide 1904 Committed for Dialogue announced that a consultative conference would take place at Okakarara between 27 and 29 October. PLUS has reliably learnt that Chief Riruako and a small delegation would travel to Germany around 12 October to lobby support for the reparation demand. There will also be a short conference organised by the Leftist Party on the reparation issue in Berlin on 15 October.
