Simon Shigwedha of the Namibia Defence Force is the 2007 Rössing Namibia Marathon Champion, running the 42.2km in 2:27:16.
In the second place was Erich Goeieman (2:28:21) and short on his heels in third place was Robert Kaxuxuena (2:28:33).
Four-time Marathon Champion in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006, Salomo Padrao David, of the Windhoek Welwitchia 77 Athletics Club, did not participate this year. His best time was 2:22:28 set in 2005.
Luketz Swartbooi still holds the Rössing Marathon Championship record time of 2:11:23 set in 1992.
This year’s event in Swakopmund started in overcast conditions, which soon changed to sunny and hot conditions with the marathon athletes experiencing temperatures in the mid-twenty degrees Celsius out on the Henties Bay road.
Forty-five athletes in the Marathon and 107 athletes in the 10km race participated in today’s event. The race was run from the parking area near the Mole and on to the Henties Bay Road and back.
The Ladies Open winner was Beate Naigombe in a time of 2:54:27, which gave her an overall ninth place in the Marathon. She was followed by Seglinde Gontes (3:48:45) and Adele de la Ray (4:11:04). Adele also took third place in last year’s event.
This year was the 16th year that the Rössing Marathon Championship was hosted.
In the 10km Hosea Frans took first place (00:30:17) – he was in second place in the 2006 event. In second place was Tomas David (00:30:35), followed by Johannes Naitembu (00:31:06).
Selma Shiimi was the first female in the 10km event in a time of 00:40:34.
About 50 walkers participated in the 5km Charity Walk for the Cancer Association of Namibia.
