Prime Minister Theo-Ben Gurirab inaugurated the new N$ 3.5 million building of International SOS Namibia next to a shopping centre in Olympia on Thursday. It houses all staff of the rescue aid company and the 24-hour alarm centre and a sophisticated switchboard designed specifically for dispatching ambulances and rescue flights. The alarm centre receives about 2 500 calls form cell phones on the emergency number 112 per day. International SOS started operations in Namibia in October 2001 because of a merger between Aeromed and Medrescue. The company evacuates about 40 clients by air every month and reacts to an average of 100 road ambulance calls per month.
