The 2007 Fistball league kicked off this weekend with the first games played in Windhoek.
In the National ‘A’ league it was decided to play this season best out of 5 sets, to toughen up competition and to use more and longer games as preparation for the National squad players for the upcoming World Championships.
Cohen, Swakop and SKW are favorites for the title and newcomers DTS to the National A will find it hard to pose a real challenge to the more established teams.
SKW kicked off their title defense with two wins, a relatively easy one against DTS, but the game against Swakop was the highlight of day. Lasting for over 90 minutes, SKW won in 4 sets. The first set was very convincing by the Greens, but than Swakop came on stringer and stronger and won the second set in a tiebreaker. SKW than won the third and looked like taking the forth easy, but Swakop ha other ideas, and had 4 set points, before loosing this time the tiebreaker to SKW. Cohen won all games in straight sets and are surprising log leaders.Newcomers DTS won their first game in the A league in 4 sets against Cohen 2.
In the National ‘ B ‘ league, SKW 2 made it clear with every game, that the title will only be won over them. All games won in straight sets, with the biggest competition coming from Cohen 3, who won the all important game in 3 sets against SKW 3.
SKW also head the league in the under 18 league over Cohen, but only on a better ball difference.
The next league games will take place on 21 April at DTS.
In the mean time, is the National squad hard busy with their preparation for the World Championships in Germany during August this year.
More news are, the Association managed to attract two European coaches to come to Namibia for 10 days coaching and development clinic in August / September this tear.
They are Petra Schmitthuysen, current German No 1 spiker and World Championship, as well as Adi Koenig, Swiss National under 18 coach for boys and girls.
