Walvis Bay: Destruction of Fire Hydrant compromises Safety of residents Monday 23rd of April 2007 Walvis Bay: Destruction of Fire Hydrant compromises Safety of residents back The fire fighting abilities of the local authority of Walvis Bay are being severery compromised by the actions of an alleged syndicate of thieves that has been stealing close to 30 hydrant heads since the long weekend. The group is believed to have sold their loot to some unscrupulous scrap metal dealers. According to Willie van Zyl, the local fire chief “the safety of residents is at stake as we won’t be able to deal with fires as effectively as we should under these circumstances”. What concerns him equally is that the criminals are able to find a market for these goods. “What does it say about some businesspeople in this town?” he remarked and appealed to anyone who may have witnessed these shameful acts to report it to the nearest police station at once. The fire chief also appealed to scrap metal dealers who may have been approached to buy hydrant heads to do likewise. So far the damage to repair the hydrants runs close to N$ 30 000. Willie van Zyl can be contacted at telephone number (064) 2013301 or cell no 081 122 0833. |
