On Wednesday, 10 May 2007 another milestone in education when the mobile telecommunication company MTC awarded seven students with bursaries to study in the field of electronic engineering, information technology and accounting and finance. Addressing the receipients, the acting MD of MTC, Mr Thinus Smith acknowledged that they had noted the numerous efforts that had been made by the Namibian Governmenbt to redress some of the inherited challenges on the education front. He further emphasised that MTC is proud to announce their contribution to the educational effort of the future leaders of this beautiful country of ours. MTC started a modest bursary program in 2004 with two students and in 2005 they increased the number by an additional four and last year it was nine, while this year seven new bursaries were awarded. MTC will be investing a total of N$ 300 000 for all the bursary students in 2007/08 alone. In keeping their peromise to make contributions to science students five will be in the area of science and technology while the other two are in the finance field. The bursary will cover hostel accommodation, tuition fees, books and a small amount in cash. The Minister thanked MTC for the financial support and encouraged the recipients to study very hard and plough back into the community. He further stressed that the students should open their heart and change their attitude, because without attitude and open heart the success will never prevail. He further cracked a joke, when he challenged one of the recipients to come and take his post as minister in years to come.
From 100 applications received, only seven students succeeded.
