Art, music, crafts and entertainment for all ages – this promises to be a big event!
(ipo) Karibib. The fifth year of the Klippenberg Arts and Craft Festival in Karibib sees itself with new and professional management; it also promises a taste of international flair. On Friday and Saturday, 27 and 28 July the little town on the edge of the Namib will become the artistic capital of Namibia.
Renowned artists Koos van Ellinckhuizen and Margit Calegari have already accepted, and they along with other Namibian artists and those from further afield will display their work in the grounds of the Klippenberg Country Club (KCC). Karakul weaving, gold craft and a broad spectrum of traditional crafts are just as in demand as the sale of Namibian hobby craft.
A variety of food stalls will take care of the body’s needs, while the beer tent will be the ideal place to relax and enjoy the planned entertainment. Let’s not forget the children and teenagers who will also be catered for.
On Friday the Festival kicks off with the Erongo region’s Namibian School Choir competition, while all participating artists are invited to attend a “meet and greet” social in the evening at the KCC. On Saturday morning at 8h00 the gates open to the public and after spending the day together, the Festival continues into the night in the grounds of the KCC with attractions for all ages and nationalities.
Musical entertainment during the day will include Trio Feminale from Swakopmund, while various performers, including the Kwaito Boys, will capture your attention with their repertoire. Bands and groups like Welwitschia and Bungy & Ash will provide music for the afternoon, while Gazza, the star attraction for the younger sector, will have you dancing the night away. However, if you consider yourself part of the older generation, there will be alternative live music and dancing in the beer tent.
This year the organisers have proposed an art competition with the theme “Create a Logo for Klippenberg”, details of which will be communicated in the near future. It is envisaged that the competition will be comprised of three categories, namely schools, amateur artists and professional artists, so that it attracts the maximum number of active participants.
So far the Klippenberg Arts & Craft Festival is being sponsored by AngloGold Ashanti - Navachab Gold Mine, FNB and Sunshine Bus Tours, who are providing a free shuttle service from Windhoek and Swakopmund to Karibib. The Hippos Press Agency CC is sponsoring a professional website introducing the participating artists and musicians, while promoting the Festival sponsors and organisers.
The late Archie van der Ploeg, main founder of the Klippenberg Arts & Craft Festival, envisaged the event as an opportunity to train young disabled people in the various art forms. Consequently, a major portion of the income will be put into a fund for this purpose. To achieve this goal and also to make the Festival a success, the organisers hope for additional monetary sponsorship. Additional donations for prizes, tents, shade cloth for stalls etc. are amongst some of the items required. Interested parties may please contact the Festival Co-ordinator.
The organisers are also planning an auction, however more detailed information will be provided at a later date. One thing is certain: The Klippenberg Arts & Craft Festival 2007 will be packed and stacked with excitement for participants and visitors alike – a real Namibian highlight!
Artists and musicians who are interested in taking part in this major festival should contact the Co-ordinator.
The organisation of the Klippenberg Arts & Craft Festival is co-ordinated by:
