Gymnaestrada News

Well it hardly seems like two years ago that we started with all our fund raising and preparations for our trip to Portugal to take part in the 12th World Gymnaestrada from 20th to 26th July 2003, now we only have five weeks left until we set out once again as ambassadors for our country. The participants and the committee have put in many hours of hard work and dedication to make the display something for all Namibians to be proud of. Last weekend saw the final preparations, which included a dress rehearsal. We are now ready to show to you, the people of the coastal community, the results and to thank you for all your support, both financially and in kind, without you the journey would not have been possible.

We have called the display "Namibia in Union". Through a combination of our many styles and cultures using the mediums of dance, music and movement the performance portrays the changing faces of our beautiful country, before and after the rain. We start with the call of a new day dawning; then come the dunes and their forever changing magnificent golden hues; rain is a major ingredient for our survival, here we ask for God’s blessing in a traditional way; the rain starts falling softly and gently; nature awakes and reacts to the feel of the rain with a kaleidoscope of movement; finally the chorus with all 88 participants moving and singing in union.

It is our intention to do three shows on Friday, 4th July at 19h00 in the Indoor Sports Complex, Walvis Bay and on Saturday, 5th July at 16h00 and 19h00 in the SFC Indoor Hall in Swakopmund. Tickets will cost N$10 per person, drinks and refreshments will be on sale.
