Sunday 20th of May 2007 On the 22nd of May 2007, John van Bergen and about 25 other cyclists will set off to cycle a route of approx. 260 km through Damaraland, Namibia. The reason for this adventure is to raise money for Save the Rhino Trust in Namibia. back Damaraland is probably one of the last places on earth where Black Rhino still roam free and it was Blythe Loutit that founded this trust and started getting the local communities in-volved in conservation of the Black Rhino. Michael Hearn came out here from England almost 15 years ago and joined SRT (Save the Rhino Trust) by being the “office boy” in Windhoek and eventually becoming a director of the Trust, alongside Blythe. Mike spent a lot of his time out in the field and it was during these times that mountain biking became a bit of a passion for him. In 2005 SRT suffered a huge loss with the death of both SRT directors, Mike Hearn and Blythe Loutit. Mike drowned whilst surfing in Swakopmund, and it is in memory of him that the public is called upon to help raise money for a Conservation Education Centre at Palmwag, in the heart of Rhino country. It is a project that both Mike and Blythe started and it needs help to be completed and to be fully effective. John van Bergen has registered himself on a registered charity website, and in order for anyone to be able to go online and donate to this cause, please visit www.justgiving.com/johnvanbergen and pledge your 10 – 1000 R, $, Euro or Pound.(gold will have to be delivered, but he can arrange a stagecoach to come get it) It is a very easy process and instructions are quite simple. |
